Nice composition in this shot. The sun rays add color to an otherwise gloomy image bringing through the joy of a new day. I like the light on the pier and how it has been enhanced to give an extra pop but i wonder if it lightens the left of the frame a little too much. I find it slightly distracting. Nice shot nonetheless.

Thanks and I do agree with the lightness on the left. I believe I am a little more skilled now to avoid that but at the time this was what I could do.

Location
I took this Virginia Beach, Va. this is the main fishing pier out in the Atlantic Ocean in October 2014.Time
This was at sunrise. I was not planning to get up for sunrise, but my wife could not sleep and let me know the morning was looking promising. I knew I wanted to take pictures at the pier, so when we got up I asked her to drive me there (10-12 blocks away).Lighting
The low clouds but breaks in the clouds gave me hope for a colorful sunrise. The actual sun rays we received was a bonus! I have a couple of shots with a few rays here and there, but nothing like this. I was just thrill to see it, let alone get a shot! It was only like this for about a minute and half. My wife just made it to the beach after dropping me off and parking, so I am glad she was able to see it with me!Equipment
This was taken with Canon 60D and Sigma 18-35MM lens. I did have a travel mefoto tripod. While it is not the biggest and strongest, it is light and I am more willing to carry it and take it on trips! In this case, I really needed it! like the say the best tripod is the one you have with you!Inspiration
I wanted to take a long exposure at this pier for sunrise, one where the waves would flatten out, so there is actually another shot I took this morning that was my inspiration to go out. But once I saw the rays peeking through I knew this could not too long of an exposure or I would risk losing the rays The inspiration was just being there and being flexible to what mother nature gave me!Editing
yes, I used lightroom to open the shadows and pulled down the highlights. I also applied noise reduction in LR as once I opened the shadows it was noisy. I added just a touch of vibrance/comntrast for just a little more separation of the rays/clouds.In my camera bag
Canon 60D or 7D mark II. I always have the sigma 18-35. I also usually have a canon 85mm or Sigma 70-200mm for options. I also always have a polarizer and ND filters 3 stop and 10 stop.Feedback
To get out there! This is a big lesson to me--it is tough to get up for sunrise. And every time I do, it pays off for me! I need to do it more! Also, to look up from your camera--sometimes I get so wrapped up in what I am doing and snapping/chimping you forget to re-evaluate the scene to see what is changing. this scene only lasted about minute or so.
