Location
In my backyard...Baltimore county, MD . Shot from inside my dining room with the window down.Time
this was taken 2-3 p in the afternoon. We had an sleet and freezing rain on and off. the section of the yard doesn't get much light overall and by mid day the rain/sleet/freezing rain were giving some nice icicles.Lighting
There really wasn't any light, except the gray overcast sky, which made the light nice and even.Equipment
I had a canon 7D markii with a tamron 150-600mm. I did not use a tripod per se, but I have the lens resting on my window acting as a stabilizer.Inspiration
My wife wanted to start feeding the birds overwinter. so I was able to set up a feeder in the same tree but on the other side. this allows the side the cardinal was shot to sit and wait for a turn. There is a big evergreen tree behind this tree in my neighbors yard giving me a great background. once that was set, it was waiting for the weather. being int he Mid Atlantic you can count on a ice storm each season and a couple snowfalls.Editing
yes, I reduced Highlight and upped the shadows. I boosted the vibrance to get the red to pop in an otherwise dull picture. I also saturated the secondary color of green in the background. In my camera bag
7D mark ii, Sigma 18-35MM, Tamron 150-600mm, I have a bean bag to use as a tripod if not carrying one, cleaners, flashlight, ND filter (3 stop and 10 stop).Feedback
capturing backyard birds can be very easy. But think it through, think where you might shoot from (inside the house, outside) safe distance not to scare them off. How will the lighting be on the birds? Think of the foreground, anything to get in your way? What will the background look like. If not sure, snap a few pictures and see. Wait for weather or something interesting to happen with the birds. They come to the feeder every day, no matter the weather.
