In a 100 year old barn in Avon, Ohio that is used as musicians practice space and recording studio.Time
This image was taken in Mid-AfternoonLighting
The barn is extremely dark as it is, there are no windows in the large part of the barn where we took the image, so I brought in two Alien Bee 400 Flash Units, an Alien Bee 800 Flash Unit and an Alien Bee 1600 Flash Unit to direct the light as I needed. This is the barn where my band used to practice, so it is insulated with foam core and Muslin backdrops to absorb sound, these two things helped with not only the atmosphere of the shoot but with any glare I might of had to deal with in a regular studio type setting that had windows or reflective surfaces.Equipment
Nikon D800, Tripod, Tamron 24 - 70 2.8 lens, 2 Alien Bee 400's, 1 Alien Bee 800 , 1 Alien Bee 1800 , flags, Gobo's and reflectors. No props were needed as all the band equipment was already there in the barn.Inspiration
I was inspired by my musicianship to take this image. The man in this image is a drummer of mine. He is an intense musician but such a laid back man. Those are very contrasting emotions to have within oneself. I wanted this photoshoot to relay those emotions about him by using the light and surrounding atmosphere to bring out not only his intensity but also to show his thoughtfulness.Editing
I use Lightroom for all my Post-Processing. I turned this image Black and White, and used the shadow, black, white and highlight sliders to tweak the image as needed to highlight the details in his face, beard, drum and arms.In my camera bag
Nikon D300 , Sb800 Flash, Batteries for both camera and flash, Nikon 24-120mm 3.5-5.6 lens , 50mm 1.8 fixed lens. Camera cloth, gray card.Feedback
The images in this series took a lot of patience to get the lighting just right. In such a dark room, with such a high ceiling, it was difficult to not lose the light. I would make sure you have enough extra lighting to do the job, and enough time to do the job right. Set up and advance planning is also crucial in shoots such as these. Being familiar with the place you are going into to do a shoot is a good rule of thumb to follow so you can have all the extra equipment you may need, especially when the location is not conventional. Most important, have fun, relax and be flexible!
