Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken from another boat that I was living on for a month in the Caribbean.....It was difficult because the boat i was on was constantly bobbing due of the incoming tide....
Time
I awoke early that day, there was nothing to do....so i thought i would try and set myself up to catch the sunlight as it first broke the night sky. The photo is called 5:51 because it was the time this photo was actually taken that day.
Lighting
The light used was ambient light.
Equipment
I was using my first "real camera" ...a Nikon D70s.....a Tamron 28-80mm 177D lens, which because of the cropped sensor i was shooting at 42mm at max aperture of 3.5....yeah, not that great, but it is possible to get a decent image.....i had no tripod at the time so i sat on the deck of the boat triggering the camera as i breathed out to try and steady camera shake. the tide rolling in was quite gentle, rocking all the boats around me..... serene. I'm going to say this was one of the hardest shots i ever took, hands down......i had to time the waves along with attempting to steady myself on a rocking boat in very dark light. Difficulty level "11" because "10" would have been easier. There was so many shots that were blurred, but i knew this series that i snapped felt right....as i finally came across it (as i review all my shots) i saw on my computer screen a quite crisp and smooth image....i was pleased, well ...relieved and pleased....
Inspiration
Literally, i was very curious to see if i could capture the first light breaking over the horizon. I took a few composition test shots to prepare myself for the moment...."I was in the zone"
Editing
According to Ansel Adams...."a photo is like a concerto piece, ...the initial photo is the written music, the dark room is the music played live." and as everyone knows Ansel was the master in the dark room....it;s important to see your camera as a "tool" to achieve the image in your imagination.
In my camera bag
A recent acquisition is an HX-80 by Sony, if its not in my shirt pocket, its in my tool bag. Its Zeiss lens covers an equivalent 24-720mm range It is a versatile little camera that truly fits in my shirt pocket. Another camera that I possess is .....by todays standards, quite old. I present the Nikon D70s 6,1 MP made back in 2005. This camera goes with me on all my journeys, the Caribbean, Israel, Turkey, or even my backyard. Most of my shots have been taken with the D70s, including this photo "5:51". Accompanying this camera are 3 lenses. A Tokina 100mm AT-X Pro Prime which was given to me by a friend, a Tamron 28-80mm 177D, and a Tamron 70-300mm 572D. Generally speaking, the Tokina is for my macro stuff, the 28-80mm for group shots, and the 70-300mm for just about anything. Nowadays i carry a Nikon D3500 with the accompanying kit lens...which is great because it has VR (vibration reduction)
