I visited this place 4 yrs ago, its actually operated like a 5 star bedouin camp, its very quite, everyone sleeps on the floor, i'll dig up a pic of the sleeping arrangements there.... Thank u for the compliment! ;)

Location

Location: Israel, the Dead Sea. About 3 miles west of the shores of the ritzy and glamorous boutiques of Ein Bokek lies Kfar Hanokdim Bedouin Resort.Hanokdim itself lies in the Judaen Desert inbetween the Arad and the historical & famous Masada Mountains, is a valley called the "Kana`im Valley". A true oasis in every sense of the word. This is not the Hilton.....

Time

I snapped this shot at 2010-10-15 @ 4:30 pm. We were trying to get to the camp site as fast as possible to ensure we were indeed booked. Although, I wasn't expecting this view that you see here. Booked or not booked, someone needed to take this shot.

Lighting

The sun was still high as you can see from the shadows, and quite honestly, we were in a hurry. I mainly just took the photo thinking one day I might be able to fix it. It came out better than expected.

Equipment

I have an old Nikon D70s, 177d 28-80mm Tamron, a 572D 70-300mm Tamron, and a 100mm prime Tokina. No tripods were invovled or special lighting. I liked to keep my hands free as possible back then, still like to. Why you might ask ?! My wife and 4 year old daughter were traveling with me. Carrying, chasing, and playing with your children is a full time job as some of you may well understand. In this particular shot I used the 572D and zoomed to about 180mm. In the desert things are very far away. And since the 572D was already mounted, I took the shot from afar. As well, changing lenses in the desert isn't really a great thing to do.... lots of dust.

Inspiration

As we were speeding along through the desert, which in the beginning was quite boring, one could notice the terrain gradually becoming more and more interesting the closer we approached the Dead Sea. I passed on many shots along the way. But once we came over the ridge on this valley, I simply couldn't pass on another shot. The valley really took your breath away.

Editing

Not a lot really. Here, on this photo i reduced the shadows a little bit and pulled in on the black a touch. That and added just a little sharpness. There wasnt alot for me to do here as i was just trying to present the scene in its natural beauty as much as possible.

In my camera bag

I am an amatuer photograher so I don't really have alot cameras and lenses. But, I have an Nikon D70s and 3 lenses. A Tokina 100mm AT-X Pro Prime , a Tamron 28-80mm 177D, and a Tamron 70-300mm 572D. The Tokina is for my macro stuff, the 28-80mm for group shots, and the 70-300mm for just about anything.

Feedback

Wow, I can't say I have any advice, but um, I sometimes wish that I could have arranged to shoot the sun setting on the valley. I knew once i got back home to review the shot from the top of that valley, I would see another shot or an angle I had missed. But it was only one part of the jouney that weekend. Later that day my daughter got to hang out with camels and of course there were more shots taken of those happy moments. Thanks for your time people and have a great day...!
