Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken at Sequoia National Park. There was a bear that was off in the distance that everyone had their eye on, but it was too far away to photograph for me even with my long zoom. This Swallowtail spent a long time on this flower and I was able to capture some good shots of it feeding.

Time

This was mid-day; around afternoon.

Lighting

It's nice when the sun is out to photograph nature. The sun light gives the scene a greater feel of depth to any image.

Equipment

I used my Canon Rebel xsi and my 75-300mm zoom.

Inspiration

I love butterflies and love it when they hang around long enough for me to photograph them. There has been many times when I see a butterfly and it fly's away too soon for me to photograph. That is always upsetting to me, but when I get a chance to hover around them snapping away it makes my day even greater.

Editing

I did a little bit of post-production on this image with some contrast to the butterfly and the flower that it is hanging from. Just enough to make it stand out a bit more than in the captured image. I also enhanced the saturation of the green foliage and of the yellows in the frame.

In my camera bag

I carry my Canon 70d and my canon rebel xsi with 18-55mm and 75-300mm lenses. I always take my tripod just in case and some filters to play around with when I have time.

Feedback

My advice for capturing something like this is to just keep your eyes peeled. Even if there is a bear that is near by, look around for other possibilities. That bear never did get close enough for a great shot, but that is totally fine with me!
