Location
The photo was taken at the Kula Botanical Garden on Maui. I go to the garden every time I visit. It is my favorite place to practice taking photos under various lighting. The garden is located about half way up the western slope of Haleakala, the 10,000 foot dormant volcano. The weather conditions are constantly changing creating conditions conducive to great photograph.Time
It was late afternoon when I took this photo. I was getting ready to leave the garden when I saw this group of flowers by the walkway. The sun was in a position to illuminate the flowers with a soft light coming through the clouds. It is one of my favorite photos from that day.Lighting
The photo was taken in natural light shortly before sunset.Equipment
I took this photo using my Nikon Coolpix P510. No other equipment was used.Inspiration
The Kula Botanical Garden is filled with beautiful tropical flowers which I love. Their bright colors and unique shapes make great subjects for photography. On my way out of the garden, I came across this bunch of light colored flowers surrounded by greenery. It was so different from the other flowers I had been looking at and the lighting was great.Editing
For this photo I use Lightroom for the post-processing. I increased the contrast and vibrance and darkened the shadows to make the flowers the center of attention. In my camera bag
I carry with me my Nikon P510 camera with which I can easily take macro to telescopic photos. I carry two 8 x10 pieces of foam board. One is black and one is white on one side and aluminum foil attached to the other to affect the lighting. I take my tripod and my case containing my adapter and UV, CPL, FLD and Neutral Density Filters.Feedback
When looking for your next great photo, look all around you. The best shot may be behind you or below as this one was for me. Change your perspective by bending down or getting your camera higher. Most cameras now have a view screen that you can rotate and still see the scene while holding the camera lower or up higher. Also be patient, don't be afraid to walk away from a shot and come back when the lighting is better.
