On our walking tour through the old town of Cartagena we went past many beautiful entrances to the old homes. Our guide told us that the small doors were used by the slaves and the tax collectors and the large doors were opened for the family and important visitors. Our guide also told us to look at the door knockers. If they were make of brass then the family was very rich, since the brass knocker was only available in Europe and had to be shipped to the new world.
