Location
This shot was taken at Magee Marsh in Oak Harbor, Ohio. Every year in the spring, there is a warbler migration that congregate here before they cross Lake Erie. Thousands of birds and many different species. This guy is a Cape May warbler.Time
It was taken in late morning, around 11:00amLighting
All natural, I lucked out with the sun filtering through the leaves.Equipment
I shot this with my old Nikon D5100 and the kit 300mm lens, hand held.Inspiration
I used to live in the area, so during the migration, I would always drive there for lunch to see what I may find. There is a period of 2 weeks in May when there is a lot of activity.Editing
I use Photoshop Elements for exposure, color correction and cropping. Then I used Topaz Labs "fur and feathers" filter for the feather texture. Lastly, I used On1 for the vignette. In my camera bag
I currently have a Nikon D7100, Nikon 18-300mm lens, and a Nikon 20mm f/1.8. Both lenses work very well for me. The 20mm is exceptional. I also have a Nikon strobe with a telescopic magnifier, variable ND filter for time exposures and polarizing filters.Feedback
For birding, you need to be in the right location, be patient and fast. These little guys a very active and you don't have much time when opportunity presents itself. This guy was probably only 6 feet from me. I set my camera on shutter priority. I don't want to go below 1/500 if possible. Since the area is all trees and brush, the light changes constantly. I do my exposure changes by adjusting either aperture. I have tried flash but I am not happy with the results. They don't look natural to me.
