Scope the area out before the sunset starts. Find an area that will best give you fore, mid and background if possible. I found a crotch in a tree that served a couple of purposes. The first was that it allowed me a good support for my camera since I didn't have a tripod. The second was that it provided a nice foreground silhouette from the tree. Take a few practice shots before sunset and check your composition. If you like it, stay put and be prepared to take at least a couple shots per minute for the entire time the sun is setting. The clouds and sun are moving constantly so you need many shots to find the best one.
