Behind The Lens

Location

Lava Lava Beach Club, Kona, Hawaii

Time

Sunset

Lighting

It was all natural

Equipment

Nikon D5100 and a Nikon 35mm lens

Inspiration

It really didn't take much inspiration.

Editing

I really didn't do much besides cropping it a little.

In my camera bag

Nikon D5100, Nikon 55-300mm kit lens, Nikon 18-85mm lens, neutral density filters, polarizing filter, spare batteries, SB600 flash and an 8X8" soft box flash attachment, lens cleaning supplies and cables.

Feedback

Scope the area out before the sunset starts. Find an area that will best give you fore, mid and background if possible. I found a crotch in a tree that served a couple of purposes. The first was that it allowed me a good support for my camera since I didn't have a tripod. The second was that it provided a nice foreground silhouette from the tree. Take a few practice shots before sunset and check your composition. If you like it, stay put and be prepared to take at least a couple shots per minute for the entire time the sun is setting. The clouds and sun are moving constantly so you need many shots to find the best one.
