I spent about an hour in the ice cave with my friend and my dog. At the back of the cave is a waterfall with a skylight (see the previous photograph) that had me befuddled as to how to capture it. As I was leaving I saw the sky softening and the pink hues on lips of the clouds. I had that feeling that this was going to be special. So, I waited and counted the cave kisses dropping on me and my camera. The next day there was a collapse in this cave and I am thankful for moments granted to me here.
Note** On December 27th, a day after I was here, an avalanche occurred in this cave.
Processing:
While I photographed a series of exposures this, like 95% of my work, is a single image. I triple processed it in Camera Raw. Once for the cave and the blues. Once for mountain and the warm light. Both of these are capture sharpened before exporting. The third time was for the sky. I soften the sky and draw all the noise out of it.
I blend the three images manually in ps and added a little more 'me' to the image.
Canon 5DII 24mm ISO100 f-11 1-3s.

This is absolutely PHENOMENAL ! As an amateur, I don't know what Camera Raw is, or how to merge two completely different photos, but I would sure like to know what photo editing tools you're using.

What grabbed my eyes, then my heart was the color contrast between the sky and ice cave, being a Michigander I have seen some beautiful ice cave and just a beautiful skies and both of these rivals of color in your photo do justice to your art and good eye. The starkness of the mountains add a great divide between the two. Absolutely beautiful.

Ice Cave With A View Big Four Ice Caves, Washington. I spent about an hour in the ice cave with my friend and my dog. At the back of the cave is a waterfall with a skylight that remain among the most surreal experiences of my life. As I was leaving I saw the sky softening and the pink hues on lips of the clouds. I made it about as far as the trees before turning back toward the cave. I had that feeling that this was going to be special. So, I waited and counted, with trepidation, the cave kisses dropping on me and my camera. ICWV is an edition of 50 available on www.jasonmatias.com Note** On December 27th, a day after I was here, an avalanche occurred in this cave.Time
Sunset! About 15 minutes before the sun went down. With the high mountains all around us here I was surprised to find the the amount of light that was on the valley floor.Lighting
As I was leaving the cave I began to notice the color turning in the clouds, but they seems so low that I didn't feel there would be a beautiful sunset that night. I waited anyway. The cave dripped space cave kisses and the waiting was tense. Ice caves are made from melting ice, after all. People have died here and I was become more aware of the danger as the time passed. When the light began to turn the sky a truer pink I felt there was a pleasant color contrast developing and knew that I had a great opportunity to capture a stunning image.Equipment
I have a Canon 5D Mark II full frame camera and a 24-70 lens. This photograph would not have been possible with out a tripod; I have a manfroto magfiber tripod that goes with me everywhere!Inspiration
You mean, besides being in a giant ice cave!? The frames with in frames caught my eye when I entered the cave and looked out an hour earlier. The arch of the cave itself, complimented by the return arc of the forest line and the standing pillar of ice called to my aesthetic, which I have narrowed down to the idea of comfortable isolation.Editing

Actually, the equipment I used for the shot is all the equipment I own. I have some support items such as a cleaning kit that has a lens spray and a micro fibre cloth. I also carry my standard survival items. I have knife ( a pretty gnarly one from WWII), a compass, a length of rope, and a medical kit that has probably been starved of all its bandaids by now. I also carry gloves for climbing and food.Feedback
Aside from being prepared for the worst, in this case, a cave collapse, I suggest just doing it. Not to rob a line from Nike but there is no substitute for time spent behind the lens. Go, go, go.
