The famous Kalapana Lava fields on the Big Island of Hawaii. I stood on top of this crack for 40 minutes waiting for the voggy (volcanic fog) sunset to turn yellow and compliment the bluish and wet lava rock. On Several levels this is a difficult shot to achieve, assuming this was a vacation photo (and that you don't live in Hawaii) it appears that the journey was a great one! Great job!

WOW! I walked on this very spot just last month and this photo is indeed an unbelievable photo... WELL-DONE !!! The Puna district is a great place to capture some interesting and one-of-a-kind photos for sure...

Location
This photo was captured in Kalapana, on the Big Island in Hawaii. This land used to be a town until the lava flow wiped it all out. Pele (the god of creation in Hawaii) destroys to create.Time
Sunset! I actually waited on this crack for over forty minutes for the light to be right. My feet and tripod straddling the gap. Its easy to lose your place out there and I didn't want anyone to take my spot, if they happened by this place. Yes, it was really hot.Lighting
I waited for the sunset to give me that yellow light. The lava flows create Vog (volcanic fog) that turns sunset yellow. I knew that the yellow would compliment the blueish hues in the lava rock.Equipment
I used my Canon 5DII and 17-40L lens on sturdy magfiber Manfrotto Tripod.Inspiration
This incredible feature! The lava landscape changes so much so fast. The flow changes every day. Land is created. Cliffs disappear. In the 40 minutes I perched here the lava in the middle ground oozed out. I was worried that it might flow around my escape route and constantly checked the ground on my side of the frame. I had never seen a feature quite like this and I wasn't leaving it behind.Editing

I have been traveling light since leaving Hawaii. Seven months, five countries, and 14 times through Customs inspired me to do it all with one camera and one lens. I have a Canon 5DII and 24-70mm Tamron Lens. And that is all. I also have a hefty magfiber tripod made by Manfrotto. I carry three batteries, a remote shutter, a cleaning kit, and CPL. Oh, and there is almost always food in there.Feedback
Exploring all the angles is important, but when you know you have something and the right light is around the corner, you got to be willing to hold out for it. Also, please mind your safety!
