Thank you for entering my 'In the Spotlight' challenge. And congratulations, you are the winner. I love this shot, the simple idea, the lead-in lines of the strings, the spotlight and the smoke (how did you do that - I tried to get smoke the other day and it was a failure!) Anyway, I digress - cracking shot and a worthy winner...!

As a guitarist/musician, I absolutely love this photo. As a photographer/artist, well, I love this photo! There's nothing left to say really. It all works so well.

I took this photo of my guitar in my home studio.Time
I took this photo late at night to ensure maximum darkness in my studio. I needed a very dark room to accommodate the type of lighting I was using.Lighting
This was to be a long exposure so I needed my studio pitch black. I simply used a small maglight flashlight shining straight down onto the sound hole of the guitar for several seconds.Equipment
I used a Canon EOS 7D on a tripod with a handheld shutter release, and a Canon prime lens.Inspiration
I love musical instruments, and I love the magic of long exposures with a creative twist. I learned a trick to generate on-camera smoke effect with string, and I used it here. I also wanted a unique camera angle to go along with the effect and so I shot down the length of the strings. To enable the attention on the sound hole and smoke I tried to focus the light tightly toward the hole.Editing
I did minimal post work on this. I had to darken the edges of the shot somewhat, but the rest was pretty much as-is. I even kept the guitar blemishes to add character. In my camera bag
I always have my Canon EOS 7D, several Canon lenses, a Sigma macro lens, my carbon fiber tripod, extra batteries, an expanded battery pack, a Canon Flash, extra memory cards, a camera strap, cleaning materials and fluid.Feedback
Creativity is key. Try things that others are not in order to stand out. Look at other photographers work, find something that inspires you then make it your own. For long exposures you will need patience, time, repetition, and persistence. Long exposures are all about experimentation.
