Behind The Lens

Location

I took this on the Blanco River in Wimberley, Texas. It is now a very special photo to me because in 2015 a flood came through and wiped out most of the trees as well as houses along the river. It will take many years for it to look like this again. In a way it is like I preserved a piece of history by photographing it.

Time

This was taken in the evening on my way home from work. Probably around 7 PM. I decided to take a different route that night and found this spot.

Lighting

The lighting was actually very poor if I am being honest. The color was kind of washed out and grey because of the time of day and position of the sun. The sun was mostly behind the line of trees. Because of that it was throwing a pale white light over the area. It wasn't until post-processing that I saw the potential in the photo.

Equipment

I used my Nikon Coolpix P500. At the time it was my only camera.

Inspiration

If it makes me feel something I photograph it. This was just another example. I was standing there looking at the scene from different angles and this is the angle that made me feel something. I guess you could say the river, the trees, the light, that is what inspired me.

Editing

Yes I did! Well, the original photo was over-exposed and too grey. At the time I didn't have any editing software so I used online software, PicMonkey. First, I had to adjust the exposure. Second, I added a green cross process filter over it. Lastly, I added a little bit of the orton effect to finish it out. The idea was to make the reflections on the water stand out as well as the color in the photo. I feel very lucky that the finished photo turned out like it did.

In my camera bag

It would depend on the situation... On a normal day it would be my Nikon Coolpix P500 with back up batteries. It is a great everyday camera. If I were going out on a specific "mission" I would most likely take my Nikon D7200 with the Sigma 17-70 lens. Then I also have Promaster Extension Tubes, an ND Filter, Polarized Filter, memory cards, and a backup battery. If I were traveling, it would all be in my travel bag.

Feedback

Time of day and weather are key things to take in to consideration. I've learned the hard way that lighting is the most important thing to think about when taking a photograph. Also, angle, what point in the photograph do you want to draw the viewer to. What are you trying to show them with what you are about to capture? Are you trying to make them feel something?
