My favorite thing about this photo is that it is an original POV. I haven't seen a similar perspective.

Location
This photo was taken in one of the most beautiful and most photographed natural "venues" in the world - Lower Antelope Slot Canyon, near Page, Arizona in the Navajo Nation. Both the upper and lower slot canyons are made of sandstone, naturally carved by wind and water over thousands of years. The Navajo people call it, "where water makes a picture of itself in the stone." It is important to note here that the only way to see either canyon is with a Navajo guide.Time
Prior to my trip in mid-March I did some research and came to the conclusion that late afternoon was the best time for photography here as the sun was at a lower angle creating the warmer, softer tones. I am glad I followed the suggestions as the end result was this photograph which to me is both enchanting and mysterious!Lighting
These canyons have their own unique challenges for photographers - lighting can be extreme. As no flash photography is allowed, tripods are a must. Different times of day cause shifts in the lighting conditions, including deep shadows, which ultimately contribute to the unique changes in color, hues and tones of the sandstone throughout this canyon.Equipment
I used my Nikon D7100 with a Nikkor 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. This lens is very versatile and I found it to work quite well for me under these conditions.Inspiration
Knowing that these canyons have been photographed countless times and from every possible angle, I was looking for something a little different. I took many many photos here, but upon seeing these "waves" of sand, it was like a magnet drawing my eyes deeper into the canyon. Getting this shot required getting "down and dirty" in the sand and shooting upward. Time in the canyon is limited so I was pleasantly surprised that this turned out so well. It is one of my favorites taken that day.Editing
Even though the overall colors were rich and warm, the extreme variations in lighting here made it necessary to pull out some shadows using Lightroom. But other than that, and adding just a bit to the overall saturation, no other post-processing was necessary. In my camera bag
At the time I shot this photo, the contents of my camera bag consisted of my Nikon D7100 and my Nikkor 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. I have since upgraded to a Nikon D750 with a Nikkor 24-120mm f/4 lens. My additional lens is a Nikkor 70-300mm f4.5/5.6 zoom lens. I always have 2 64gb memory cards in my camera with a 32gb spare in the bag. Additionally, I always carry a spare battery, UV and polarizing filters for both lenses, a Tiffen variable ND filter, a lightweight carbon fiber tripod, and battery charger.Feedback
Usually landscape photographers have the advantage of time and also the ability to return at different times of the day (or night) to capture a specific scene. But in these canyons, photographers are restricted by the rules of the Navajo tour groups. In order to make the most of these incredible canyons, the so-called photographer's tours are a must, but times are limited. Tripods are not allowed on the regular tours, and the canyons are either too dark or the lighting conditions too variable to expect any decent shots if done handheld. The advantage of the photographer's tours, even though a bit more expensive, is that group size is more limited and you are allowed more time in the canyon. The Navajo guides are all very experienced and knowledgeable about camera settings and locations for the best photos. Also, visiting during months of fewer tourists I feel is essential to get the most out this incredible experience, i.e. March or April. Do your homework, make reservations ahead of time, but most importantly, take time to look around (and up!) and enjoy the beauty of this natural wonder.
