This photo was taken on the beach in Kihei, Maui, HawaiiTime
I purposely got up early one morning in the hopes of catching a beautiful sunrise with some clouds. I got more than I bargained for when this lady in her beautiful turquoise hat appeared briefly on the beach and raised her arms to greet the morning sun...Lighting
Maui offers endless opportunities for great photography, but because the sun can be so intense during mid-day, early morning or late afternoon is always the best time of day to shoot, especially on or near the water.Equipment
This shot was taken using my new Nikon D750 full frame camera with a Nikkor 24-120mm lens and polarizing filter on a tripod.Inspiration
I love landscape and ocean photography, so I purposely got up early one morning in order to take some photos before the beach became crowded with tourists. The beautiful clouds, beach drift and gentle surf drew me to this particular spot. I had my camera already mounted on my tripod and was taking pictures when this lady in her pretty blue hat suddenly wandered into view. As she stopped and raised her arms the perfect photo opportunity presented itself! It lasted only a moment and after just a few seconds she continued her journey on down the beach. I was so pleased that I was actually ready to capture this moment!Editing
Often landscape photography requires a fair amount of post processing. However, on this particular day I was able to take advantage of the warm glow that early morning usually presents. Lightroom was used for minimal enhancement of contrast and clarity. In my camera bag
My camera is a Nikon D750 full frame with a Nikkor 24-120mm f/4 lens. My newest lens acquisition that I find extremely versatile is a Nikkor 28-300mm f/3-5-5.6 zoom. In addition I also carry a Nikkor macro 60mm f/2.8 lens and a Nikkor 35-105mm f/3.5-4.5 lens. I always have 2 64gb memory cards in my camera, with a spare 32gb card in my camera bag as a backup, as I always shoot in both Raw and jpg Fine. Additionally, I always carry a fully charged spare battery and battery charger, UV and polarizing filters for all lenses, a Tiffen variable ND filter, the Cokin ND filter system, a lightweight carbon fiber tripod, and cleaning supplies.Feedback
Landscape and ocean photographers often have the advantage of returning to a particular location at different times of the day or night in order to capture the same scene under different lighting or weather conditions. Early morning and late afternoon, however, are almost invariably the best times to shoot any landscape or beach scene because the light is naturally softer, warmer and more pleasing. This in turn usually results in a lot less post-processing than would otherwise be necessary if the same scene was photographed in the harsh mid-day sun. And in the case of this particular photograph, there is often also a good deal of luck involved as well!
