Stunning image Nina. Capturing the splash in front of the setting sun was a terrific touch.

I specifically tried to get a similar capture, the sun through a wave at sunset :). You did it so well that I think I'll try something else ;)!

Location
The Pacific coastline near Monterey and Carmel, California has some of the most spectacular ocean scenery anywhere, and if you're looking for a good sunset it's almost always a sure bet that this particular area will provide one! The rocky shoreline is also a prime place to find heavy surf, so when combined with a beautiful sunset, the result is usually some beautiful photo opportunities.Time
This was taken during the very early evening hours on an unusually warm January day. The surf was magnificent and the sky didn't disappoint!Lighting
While photographing waves breaking on the rocks just as the sun was setting, it became apparent that I might just have a chance to capture some beautiful light from the sun behind a crashing wave to emphasize it. I was thrilled when I saw the results of this shot!Equipment
This shot was taken handheld with a Nikon D7100 camera and a Nikkor 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 lens. No other equipment was used.Inspiration
I have a passion for landscape and ocean photography....and because we live so close to the coast we are lucky to be able to visit the Monterey peninsula frequently. On this particular day we knew that the surf was high and because we had had a recent storm we were pretty certain there would be clouds with a possible sunset. A little pre-planning and it all came together to create the perfect photo opportunity!Editing
Lightroom was used to bring out the shadows in the foreground rocks a bit. Some saturation and contrast were also used to emphasize the sun flare that had been captured in the original photo. In my camera bag
At the time I shot this photo, the contents of my camera bag consisted of my Nikon D7100 and the Nikkor 18-105mm lens. I have since upgraded to a full frame Nikon D750 camera with a Nikkor 24-120mm f/4 lens. My additional lens is a Nikkor 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 zoom. I always have 2 64gb memory cards in my camera with a 32gb spare in the bag. Additionally, I always carry a spare battery, a UV and polarizing filters for both lenses, a Tiffen variable ND filter, a lightweight carbon fiber tripod, and a battery charger.Feedback
Landscape photographers often have the advantage of returning to a particular location at different times of the day (or night) to capture a specific scene under different lighting conditions. This was no different. However, since you can't always plan on a sunset there is a good deal of luck, and patience, involved when trying to capture one. However, I believe the best opportunity for taking great ocean photos, with or without a sunset, are late in the day when the light is softer and more "golden".
