Gorgeous composition, but the selection errors around the tree leaves spoil the effectiveness of the sky. Try expanding the selection by one or two pixels before making changes.

This is a very nostalgic photo for me...it was taken during a family reunion on what used to be my grandfather's farm near Longmont, Colorado in the shadow of the Rocky Mountains. Several years ago it became part of a wildlife refuge with this beautiful little lake centered where a cornfield once grew. Sadly, the terrible floods that hit this region of Colorado in 2013 nearly destroyed the old farm, lake and surrounding area. Restoration is in progess, but it will be several years before it has fully recovered. I'm very grateful that I have this photo to remind me of that wonderful place and time!Time
It was taken at about 6 p.m. just as the sun was setting. The bonus was the rowboat filled with happy people enjoying the sunset!Lighting
The warm glow of the late afternoon sun always seems to make for the best lighting conditions, especially in landscape photography.Equipment
The photo was taken with an old Kodak P712 zoom digital camera. No other equipment was used.Inspiration
I spent many summers on this farm as a child, but until the family reunion I hadn't been back since it had been turned into a wildlife refuge with the lake. I was enchanted with the transformation that had taken place and took many photos knowing how pleased my grandfather would have been knowing his beloved farm had become a wonderful haven for birds and wildlife. When the sun started going down and the rowboat appeared, I knew the lighting was perfect and that it was a photograph begging to be taken!Editing
Because I had used an older camera, the clarity of the original photo wasn't quite what I remembered seeing when I shot this picture. I used Lightroom 4 to bring up the clarity, contrast and just a little bit of saturation to bring out the overall warmth, especially where the sunset was reflected in the water. I then sharpened it just a little to give the photo an overall crisp, clean look.In my camera bag
Since that photo was taken I have upgraded cameras several times, most recently to a full frame Nikon D750 and a Nikkor 24-120mm f/4 lens. My additional lenses include a Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-f/5.6 zoom, a Nikkor AFS Micro 105mm f/2.8 (macro), and a Sigma DG 150-500mm variable f/5-6.3 zoom. I always have 2 64gb memory cards in my camera with a spare 32gb card in my bag. Additionally, I always carry a spare battery, UV and polarizing filters for both lenses, a Tiffen variable ND filter, the Coken variable ND filter system, a lightweight carbon fiber tripod, and a battery charger. And I never leave home without a microfiber cleaning cloth for my lenses!Feedback
Landscape photography is, in my opinion, one of the most rewarding types of photography there is. It's really the only way of artistically documenting the beauty of the world! Landscape photographers often have the advantage of returning to a particular location to capture the same scene at different times of the day and under different lighting conditions. However, most photographers will agree that either early morning or late afternoon are almost always the best times because the light is so much softer and with more golden tones than during the middle of the day, thereby enhancing the overall mood of a photo. And of course, if there are fluffy clouds or a beautiful sunrise or sunset in the mix, that's definitely a plus!
