Behind The Lens

Location

I shot this image at Selwicks Bay Flamborough Head, East Yorkshire, UK. I parked up in the lighthouse carpark and walked along the cliffs towards North landing I came across anold ww2 bunker I climbed on top and walked to the front edge and saw this view.

Time

it was the 24th August last year at 18:34pm about 2 hours before sunset but the clouds were just starting to colour up with a nice pink tinge

Lighting

I decided to use the Lee big stopper to try create some drama in the sky and I used a three stop hard Graduated filter to bring out detail in the cliff s this left the sea 3 stops brighter than the sky which was addressed with layermasks in photoshop

Tripod: Manfotto 055XPROB with Junior geared Head Camera: Canon EOS 5dmk3 Lense: EF17-40mm f/4L USM Lee Big Stopper and Lee 0.9 Hard graduated ND filter Cable release

Inspiration

I had seen a Photo of this view taken at sunrise on a website and live quite close by so i found the location and have tried several shots always at sunrise but on this particular day I decided to try the shot with the early evening light and use a big stopper to slow the shot down to a 240 second exposure creating some drama in the sky

Editing

Imported to lightroom where slight adjustments were made to highlights, shadows, whites, blacks and clarity then some adjustments were made to the verticals correcrting lense distortion it was exported to photoshop to use layer masks to adjust exposure of the sea and a final sharpen

Feedback

I always like to prepare well and I always check the weather forecast , cloud maps and tide times before going out with my camera this location in my opinion always looks better at high tide especially for long exposures
