Location
This photo was taken at Cabo Espichel ( Portugal ) at the end of the "Golden hour" One of the top ten of most beautiful places in Portugal...Time
This photo was taken at the turn of the "Golden hour" into the "Blue hour" A short but wonderful time of day to shoot special photos.Lighting
The lighting during the "Golden hour" is always wonderful, colors are warm when the sun is low at the horizon at the end of the day, giving your photos a kind of mysterious and wonderful glow... The "blue hour" is just before the sun sets completely and has a totaly different light, blue and cold... In this photo I was able to catch them both, creating a wonderful combination of cold blue and warm orange! The main feature in this photo is the sun reflecting in the old lighthouse, creating a natural "lamp".Equipment
This photo was shot free out of hand without any extra equipment with a Lumix DMC-TZ60, my wonderful little friend with a nice Leica lens.Inspiration
The inspiration for this photo was primarily the sun reflecting in the top of the old lighthouse making it look like she was still in use... I had to move quickly as the sun was going down quite fast. As always at those moments, my SD card was giving me some troubles! I had to change it for another one and my battery was very low as well. A few minutes were left and the colors of the ancient wall changed wonderfully into blue. I was surprised about the beauty of this short moment, having both the Golden and Blue hour in one shot! I only had the chance to take three more photos and the sun set along with my camera...Editing
I edited this photo in Lightroom to put some emphasis on the colors of the lighthouse and I played a little with the light intensities and the highlights to make the dark wall stand out a little more.In my camera bag
I don't have any equipment at all, I have a Lumix DMC-TZ60, all my photos are taken with this little miracle of a camera... The best thing about this camera is that it has a good Leica lens and it is very easy to carry with you because it practically fits in your back pocket. Many times you see something worth while photographing but you only carry a pocket camera or a cell phone with you... in that case your bag of equipment is filled with the opportunity, inspiration, a good eye for detail and passion for photography!Feedback
If you want to take a photo like this one you have to wait for the "Golden hour" when the sun sets and be amazed about the beautiful warm colors the low sun creates... Make sure the light comes from the right direction, depending on what you want to achieve. If you want to take a silhouette it's better to shoot into the direction of the sun but if you want to take a photo with warm soft fairy tale like colors, it's better not to shoot into the sun but choose a position with the sun in your back or sideways. You have to plan carefully where you want to take your photo from as the sun sets, because you don't have much time. Colors and light change quickly at this time of day. The golden light suddenly turns into blue just before the sun sets completely! In this case I was surprised having them both in one photo but if you’re too late…tomorrow is allways another chance! Take more shots with slightly different settings so you can choose the best one once you get home and open your laptop, the magic of today's world begins... I allways crop it later into the size and composition I like best. Crop the photo in different ways, so you can choose the best one the next day when you can have a fresh look at them! And last but certainly not least; make sure your battery is charged up and your SD card works well!
