Carpathian mountains, Romania. The path down from Caraiman (2384m) to Busteni.
Saturday in Bucuresti on a business trip with nothing to do in town. So took an early train to Sinaia, then the cable car up to 2000m and set off on a 15km hike. The mountain scenery is stunning and I was surprised how many people were up there. I only had rough terrain running shoes with me but was better equipped for the conditions than many I saw. The weather was still good but this was probably the last summery weekend of the year. There was warm sunshine most of the way but clouds were funnelling up the east side of the slopes and the summit was lost in cloud. Everything went well until it came to the descent. I had planned to come down a track beneath another cable car that runs down to the next town of Busteni, but hadn’t realised how difficult it was going to be. It dropped relentlessly from 2300m to 900m on steep rock and loose earth. There were frequent sections with fixed ropes and it took me 4 hours to get down. Very hard on the legs, and I noticed the change in altitude as well. The town you can see in the bottom is more or less where I had to get to. Fab day out!

I love everything about this photo. The dog and the man standing on the cliff. The curves and depth. Stunning!!!

It reminds me of Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog: a painting by Caspar David Friedrich.

Would have been mid-afternoon by the time I got here.Lighting
Every so often I got lucky with a break in the clouds and the sun came shining through.Equipment
This was a hiking trip and I was carrying minimal equipment: Sony NEX-7 with a Tamron 18-200.Inspiration
Just a lucky shot: I'd been overtaking / overtaken by this guy and his dog for a couple of hours. He was local and we'd exchanged a few words. Suddenly I spotted him here and grabbed the shot.Editing
Nothing more than a conversion to B&W and contrast enhancement in Lightroom. In my camera bag
When travelling I used to use a Sony NEX-7 with a Tamron 18-200. Unfortunately in May 2015 Sony Service messed up a sensor replacement and I am still waiting for the repaired camera to be returned to me. So in the meantime I have been carrying a FujiFilm X-T1 with a Fujinon 18-135. It is bulkier than the Sony but so much nicer to use - a "real" camera with a traditional analog feel. And the results are stunning... The Sony will be on eBay if I ever get it back.Feedback
I was tired and the weather was constantly changing. I had my camera ready to hand with some settings that I thought might work if I spotted something and needed to shoot fast: f8, 160/s, ISO 200.
