Behind The Lens

Location

this was taken on the Little Gunpowder river in northern Baltimore county Maryland.

Time

This was taken around noon. the good thing about waterfalls in the forest is the sun has a hard time getting through so you don't need to be up at the crack of dawn!

Lighting

There is some light coming from the back with a little open sky. but the light was flat, in shadows of the trees which was helpful in slowing down the shutter for the water flow.

Equipment

Canon 60d with Sigma 18-35. I did not have a tripod with me as this was more about a hike then pictures. I didn't know the waterfall was here until we got there. I used a rock and my phone as my tripod and balance it as best I could. I did have to crop as it was not totally straight.

Inspiration

I looked at my pictures and realized I did not have many autumn photos that I really liked, so I made a point to get out last autumn to take these types of shots. I was not expecting this waterfall, that is why I did not have a tripod, it was supposed to be just about the trees. when I go there though, I knew this could be good. the lighting was even and had enough color differences that this could work. I knew post processing woudl be needed to make it pop (see below) but I felt good when taking this shot.

Editing

yes, I used a fall preset I purchased. the main purpose of this preset was for fall color and help taking the brown colors to red. this really helped this photo. the oranges and yellows were there--there was also red, but there was more brown then red. So that was really helpful. I really thought this was a little too saturated but I received such good feedback, I decided to put it up and again, was well received. thank you to everyone!

In my camera bag

Usually I always have the 18-35 1.8 sigma attached. I usually bring a longer lens as well, maybe my 85mm or 70-200. unless I am going for wildlife specifically, then it is the 150-600mm tamron. I try and bring a tripod and ND filters as well. After this adventure, I have found a smallish bag in which I keep crumpled packing peanuts. This will allow me to set the camera on something nicer if a tripod will not work.

Feedback

Be prepared--and if you don't want to carry a tripod, look for what other sources you can use. The main thing is don't say I don't have this or that so I cant do what I want. Take a minute and think about alternatives and options.
