This could have been a 'so so' image, but your skill with the angle, composition and lighting have produced a wonder shot. I love the balance and strength portrayed in this image. Well done.

This image definitely has the WOW factor...it's simple and less is always more. The composition is great, works so well. Your angle being so low, makes this image what it is. Love it!

I love taking photos of horses in their natural environment in all kinds of weather conditions. This photo was taken on a cold, bright and beautiful day in March 2009 when there was still a little snow on the ground which reflected well the light from the low sun, so the lighting on the horses was very good.Equipment
I used Canon EOS 5D camera and Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM lens to take this photo.Inspiration
I have often tried to frame a horse with another horse or horses but the results have not always been acceptable, but this time I was very pleased with the outcome. I had to lie in the snow for some time because the horses were so friendly that they kept coming too close to me and the camera. But my patience this time lead to a good result when suddenly all came together for just a short moment. And it was well rewarded because the image won the overall prize in the "Digital Camera" competition 2009.Editing
In the post processing in PhotoShop CS4 - after Camera Raw convertion - I started to crop the image slightly to get a better balance. After that I darkened the sky a bit to get more contrast so the main subjects (the horses) would stand out better. I did have so good natural light on the moment the photo was taken that I didn’t have to do much to lighten up the horses - but just a little bit. Then finally I increased the contrast in the whole image and gave it an appropriate sharpness with Unsharp mask.In my camera bag
Canon EOS 5D Mark III and Canon Sl1 cameras, Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM II, Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM and Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM II lenses. Canon Extender EF 2x II.Feedback
I would recommend to everyone when photographing horses to have in mind their beautiful figure and consider how it is possible to use their great forms to build up an interesting and even a very different image - especially when the horses interact to one another. This is of course also valid when photographing other living creatures including human beings. This idea of mine to let one horse frame another is old and I have a lot of such images - and they are all very different. But talking about the forms I want to point out that when looking at this image it is possible to see the third horse forming between these two partners and that gives the image more depth and meaning. I hope you see it! It may take time and patience but those are the two main factors you need when taking photos of animals - at least if you want an acceptable result.
