Like everyone else, my dream to see the lights. Amazing shot. I really love the boat hull. Absolutely breathtaking! Congrats on the feature. Well deserved.

Wow, what an outstanding use of decay standing in the foreground of the immense beauty of aurora borealis! It clearly shows how nature's endless wonder far exceeds the ephemeral creations of mankind.

It's been on my bucketlist to see this spectacle of nature since I was born. Still haven't, but this inspires and motivates me to do so even more!

Very beautiful! I am headed to Alaska in a couple weeks to shoot the auroras. I see that you said this is a composite of two shots. Long exposure for the foreground and a much shorter one for the sky I am assuming?

Location
This is a composite of two images. The one of the poat is taken on the Snæfellsnes peninsula Iceland, which is a very beautiful area and popular among landscape photographers. This old abandoned boat is located by the beach on the north part of the coastline named Skógarströnd. I took the photo of the northern lights just few days later near my hometown Hafnarfjordur Iceland.Time
The image of the boat is taken at 17:17 and the one of the aurora borealis at 23:33 just before midnight.Lighting
Every time I experience the northern lights in the sky it is unique and I love photographing them. The photo of the boat is taken when there was still some daylight so the boat was well lit up for this image.Equipment
Canon EOS 5D Mark II camera, Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM II lens and Manfrotto tripod.Inspiration
I have always been fascinated by boats - especially old boats with good textures to photograph. They are of course very good subjects to photograph - very pictorial - but it is more; I think it is the stories they tell, stories of fishermen working on sea in various conditions, stories of life and death, happiness and sadness, stories with contrast of the real life. And as far as I am concerned, then I can strongly feel the life of my ancestors who many were seamen, when I am photographing old boats. And I also like to photograph the northern lights (Aurora Borealis), but they don’t show up every night in the sky and not necessarily when you’re located on some interesting places to photograph. I wanted to get some interesting and pictorial boat with the aurora lights in the background but hadn’t been very successful so far. So I decided to make one of these two images and was rather pleased with the outcome. The image won golden medal in the Trierenberg Super Circuit competition 2012.Editing
Obviously there was some work for me in the processing to put these two photos together so it would be an image that would look like it was real and work as a whole. I am not used to that kind of work so I don’t know if I used the best tools to do so and can hardly describe the process. Other than this manipulating work I did not have to do very much,- along with some improvements in light and contrast I gave the boat a bit of greenish lustre for the final touch. In my camera bag
Canon EOS 5D Mark III and Canon Sl1 cameras, Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM II, Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM and Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM II lenses. Canon Extender EF 2x II.Feedback
This picture is one of 4 published images of mine which I have made of two or more photos. It is very important to me that at the same time the viewer find it real it is also known to him that it is a composite of two photos. It should not be kept as a secret - that is an advice I give to all of them who are putting photos together like this. On the other hand I encourage all serious photographers to try to capture the wanted subject on the spot, preferably in one shot or regarding the conditions in more exposures merged together.
