Location
This photo is taken on one of the most famous places in Iceland named "Jökulsárlón" which could be called "Glacial river lagoon" in English. The lake, which is located in southeast Iceland, has grown much the last years at varying rates because of melting of the glaciers. It covers an area of about 18 km2 (6.9 sq mi) and recently became the deepest lake in Iceland, at over 248 metres (814 ft). It is considered as one of the natural wonders of Iceland. Jökulsárlón has been a setting for four Hollywood movies: A View to a Kill, Die Another Day, Tomb Raider and Batman Begins, as well as the "reality TV" series Amazing Race.Time
This photo is taken at 13:08 PM on a beautiful August day 10 years ago.Lighting
The weather in Iceland is unpredictable and so is the light. This August day I saw all kind of weather and light - but it was very still all day. On the moment I took the image I had the sun shining from behind on the ice but a dark cloudy sky in the background - circumstances that gave the image a good contrast. And because of the stillness I had a wonderful reflection in the lake.Equipment
Canon EOS 300D camera and Canon EF 75-300mm f/4.0-5.6 III lens. I also used polarizer filter.Inspiration
I had been planning to go to this place for a long time to take some photos, I had been there before but not with the camera. So this was my first visit with my camera and I enjoyed it very much and was also quite lucky with the weather conditions. This place is never the same from one time to another because the ice is moving and melting and new ones coming from the glaciers so it is very exciting going there to photograph.Editing
I did not have to do much work in the post processing. I had to correct the level a bit and then I increased the contrast. In my camera bag
Today this equipment is in my bag: Canon EOS 5D Mark III and Canon Sl1 cameras, Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM II, Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM and Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM II lenses. Canon Extender EF 2x II.Feedback
I would like to encourage everybody who are going to visit Iceland to go to Jökulsárlón to enjoy this beautiful place and to take photos. And always be patience especially because of the variation of the weather and light. It is always changing so it is important to spend some time by the lake to find the right moment and the right perspective.
