Behind The Lens

Location

In my hometown; Enkhuizen (Holland) there is an antique city prison, all build out of oak timber. During the past centuries the 3 story building is tilted quite a lot but it's very well preserved and in original 17 century condition.

Time

I took this photo at the end of the day, about 4 pm in spring.

Lighting

The lighting was quite easy, because the faint spring sun came in at the perfect angle through the two big windows, creating just enough light and shadow for this photo.

Equipment

This photo was shot free out of hand without any extra equipment.

Inspiration

When I visited this antique prison monument, I loved the interaction of the structures of the windows and stairs with the wonderful light and shadow effects they created. The lovely textures of the antique oak wood and the filtered light formed a great combination for a beautiful photo...

Editing

I was trying to edit this (original color) photo in Lightroom without a satisfying result... Some days later I decided to give it a try in black and white and I was very pleased with the result! I played a lot with the details and light intensities to emphasise the geometrical patterns and textures.

In my camera bag

I don't have a bag of equipment... My love for natural beauty and spontanious composition is enough for the moment. I always carry my Lumix DMC-TZ60 with me, wich practically fits in my back pocket and I never have to worry about the extra equipment as I am in the beginning of the learning process of photography. One day when I know how to use and set the camera well enough, I will start to think about a bag filled with technical things instead of the need to understand how it works first...

Feedback

When you are photographing in small spaces with a standard lens, you have to choose your POV very carefully. This photo was taken with my camera flat against the wall in the lower corner...I choose my camera settings first because I couldn't see my screen anymore when I took the photo. Another problem is the distorted perspective you get, all the vertical lines come closer together in the top of your photo. This problem is easily resolved in Lightroom, as well as in other editing programes. To be able to do this you have to shoot a wider area because you will end up with a smaller photo. Once edited and straigtened out, the photo looks more relaxed and natural. Crop and edit the photo in different ways, so you can choose the best one the next day when you can have a fresh look at them!
