No this is not a black and white shot. In 2011, Kilauea (the active volcano on the island of Hawaii) was producing clouds of ash. The trade winds picked up the ash, carrying it across Maui and the rest of the islands. The locals call the haze created by the ash “vog,” a blending of “volcanic ash” and “fog.” The vog blotted out the usual bright colors of the sunset, producing this otherworldly and nearly gray-scale view of the setting sun.
