Location
This photo was taken in the comfort of the children's home. As a newborn photographer I find that little ones do fantastic in familiar surrounding. I am self taught, and do this work only part time, as I am a retired senior.Time
I aim to take newborn photos in the late morning or early afternoon, as children are more apt to be at their best during these hours. A happy child makes for a happy photographer.Lighting
Most all my photos are done in natural lighting. This photo was done on the floor, with natural lighting coming in the window from above the children and also to the right. The floor offer a very safe place for a toddler and newborn. I then stand directly over top of them, birds eye view looking down into their darling faces.Equipment
I use and love Pentax cameras. I use a Pentax K-3 camera, and a 35 mm fixed lens, for this shot. The lens was a cheaper plastic version ( under $150), that has an amazing glass. I call this lens my fantastic plastic.Inspiration
Two year olds are so full of energy and are not great for still poses. So I have found that by laying the two year old flat on his back, with you over top of him, both distracts and amuses him. Then placing his sibling in his arms is both safe and enchanting. The pose connects the two children, and by the toddler looking into the camera, snap...what a capture! In one or two minutes you are done. Make sure your camera is secure around your neck, so that you are ready to point and shoot. Also for the safety of the children beneath you and your camera.Editing
I do very little post processing. However I do want to make sure that the eyes are sharp and crisp, skin clear, and ones balanced. Children often have beautiful skin and bright eyes all on their own, so if one gets it right, then your work load becomes lighter in the processing department. In my camera bag
My love for the Pentax camera come from the fact that you can use any lens they ever made on their camera. In 1977 I owned my first Pentax camera, and when Pentax moved into digital, I was able to bring my lens collections along. My bag has two Pentax cameras, and 5 favorite lenses..... 35mm.....50mm, sigma 70 mm.... Pentax 16 -45 mm ....Tamron Macro 70-300mm. I own a Pentax flash and a heavy duty tripod.Feedback
Whenever working with children, make sure that you have time and space. Be interested in capture the essence of the child. Never force a smile, but rather chapter one if it happens. Show the child kindness and gentle care. Patience is the true key to capturing magical moments. Children are full of wonder, beauty, and raw emotions....just be ready, to click that shutter, when their essence shines through.
