Location
This photo was capture in a remote town called Tumber Ridge, BC, Canada. It was on a hiking trail that lead to a water fall and imprinted dinosaurs track in the rock beds. Walking along that trail my eyes were drawn to a small patch of colour off to the left. I simply stood over that miniature patch, with a birds eye view, snapped this shot.Time
I was walking the trail mid day, but the forest was very dense and very shaded. The day light was still strong and the colours of of the patch of fungi were very visible and very beautiful.Lighting
The forest is the one place on a bright sunny day, that your natural lighting is very balanced. In the thick of the trees there is shade everywhere with patches of sunshine filled in. Unlike being in the open where the sun is harsh, and the shade is sparse. Therefor a forest walk on the brightest of days can and will render itself to beautiful lighting everywhere.Equipment
I used a Pentax K-3 camera, even though the Pentax is not as well know as Canon or Nikon, it is a beautiful camera that is know to be a real workhorse. Pentax does not spend a lot of money in advertising because they are a smaller company, but as a Pentax user , they hold there own in the camera world, and have been in the top ten best cameras for years.(not in any way paid by Pentax for my praise...LOL). I used a 16-45 lens, which means I was close to the image to capture such detail. This is a hand held image and not flash was used, just the beautiful nature light of Mother Nature.Inspiration
I love colour, and harmony in nature. While walking on this forest trail, seeing this small but beautiful patch of amazing burst of colour and balance, I came to a complete halt. I wanted the photo to reflect and capture the beauty that was laying at my feet. I needed the photo to be sharp, and the lighting to be true. This patch of the forest floor was stunning and I was truly honoured to have spotted its beauty.Editing
Very little processing goes into a capture of this sort. I use RAW format, so I needed to bring it to the JPEG format. I lifted the light a bit, balanced the saturation of colours, and that was all that was needed. Mother Nature took care of the rest!In my camera bag
My bag of goodies are usually light when I am hiking. I am a senior of sixty, and want to put my energy into the walk, not the load. Most of my photos are hand held and I have learnt many tricks over the years for holding a good steady hand. I often carry two lenses...one 16-to 45 for wide angle views, and 55-300 close ups and distances. It really is a great range with these two telescopic lenses. This is for hikes and walking, during portraits and children, my bag changes up.Feedback
The best advice I can give anyone who wanted to capture the forest floor would be keep your eyes wide open. Look everywhere as you walk, seeing some that catches you eye, go have a closer look. Magic of colours and critters are plenty. Remember, your camera can open to many different setting to allow in more light....or less light, so once you find that berry patch, or mushroom, ant hill or fallen log, you can capture the beauty and magic. Take your time during your walk, it is not about the fast pace or time finished. Many other photographer hurried by me during the walk, which led to a waterfall. Some even pasted me heading back out...they all got photos of the fall, but only I capture this stunning photo of the forest floor. As a photographer always look for beauty each step of the journey!
