Location
This photo was taken on the great Prairies of Northern Canada. I am a self taught photographer, and love the fact that the ever changing skies of the Prairie fields gives opportunities to learn new photography continually.Time
The beauty of a storm rolling in, is that you always have defused light. It really does not matter the time of day. The real quest here, is to get your photo, before the storm reaches you!Lighting
The lighting in this image is stunning. You have sunshine, clouds, grey rain falling. You need to pay attention to all the areas, balancing the the different lights. I love the uses of lightroom, to teak and enhance the different light in a shot such as this!Equipment
My camera is ALWAYS a pentax. I am a die hard pentax-oin. Yes I am love with the pentax line, not the most popular, but built like a work-horse. This is a hand-held shot, taken with a 16-45. That range of a lens is perfect for landscape such as this.Inspiration
I love watching the storms move across the great plains. It is always a challenge to capture the right light, the right angle. I love the challenge. I am always learning, always wanting to capture the beauty I see, so that others can see it also. Storms move us....the sheer power of them. Storms also excite and scare us. The emotion a storm can bring is fascinating. That is the inspiration of this capture.Editing
Very little post processing was needed for this photo. I always enhance the light, and make sure the white balance is reflecting the colours as beautiful as they are.In my camera bag
I carry my Pentax K3 everywhere I go.....you never know what you might see today? I carry two lens in my everyday bag. a telescopic, and a prime. The prime lens seems to often give a more crisp picture, but the telescopic has the range you can shift and change for the circumstance that is before you. I always have a tripod in my car, and carry it to my designations when needed.....but I do love taking photos hand held. I have developed a very strong steady hand, and it serves me well.Feedback
The advice I give others whom may desire to capture a storm photo, is be very patience. Be aware of your lighting...if it darkens over fast, open your camera a stop or two. That nature light will brighten your photo, and show off the dark greys even more so. Have a good steady hand,if you do not, reach for your tripod. A soft cloth to wipe your lens if small pre drops of rain are being blown toward you. Hey, it never hurts to have that umbrella close by too. My best advice to you, above all, is have fun.... really enjoy the sights you are seeing. Never be afraid to try new settings on your camera....you just might capture that, "once in a life time photo!"
