This shot was taken from the balcony of my cruise ship while in the gulf of Paria as we were approaching the Port of Spain in Trinidad.Time
A stepped out on the balcony just as we were entering daylight. This shot was taken just before sunrise.Lighting
I think what helped with the visual of this image is there was no strong light yet. So the artificial lighting on the drilling rig is the strongest light in the image and it helps with the reflection on the water.Equipment
This shot was taken with a Nikon D7500 using a Nikkor 16 -80 zoom. The camera was handheld.Inspiration
I like getting out in the exterior public areas early mornings or as the sun is setting when I cruise. This particular morning the view was good from the balcony of my cabin. So I just stayed there and grabbed shots as we were approaching the port.Editing
This was heavily processed. To be honest I can't really remember all the steps. The most important step was using Luminar 4 and one of the stock images of the clouds and lightning for the background creating the dramatic affect I was looking for.In my camera bag
I carry a Nikon D7500 and a D7200. I have a nice Nikkor 80-400mm zoom, wide angle 10-24mm, as well as the 16-80mm zoom that I took this shot with. I carry a Sirui tripod for when I travel. I should use it more than I do.Feedback
I think this shot was more about being in the right place at the right time and then the creative enhancement of the image afterwards. We had had eight other ports during the trip and many were much prettier and worth shooting. This port was the most industrial, so I decided why not focus on that. The beauty of digital is take lots of shots with different f stops and shutter speeds. You can always delete the bad ones of the ones of no interest.
