I loved getting to work with this beautiful little girl. She wasn't into getting her portrait taken at all when we first got started with our session. Even her mother was starting to think it just wasn't going to happen. But with a little bit of patience and the careful planning I did to make sure we were going a be able to photograph in the best lighting possible she warmed up to me in about 15 minutes and I was able to capture some amazing photographs of her.

Location
This photograph was taken a few miles south of Paris, IL on a gravel road. We were actually going to try and capture a few photos in the grass but she liked playing in the dirt and rocks much better.Time
I took this photograph as the sun was setting.Lighting
I used natural light to capture the photo.Equipment
I used a Canon 5D Mark III and a Canon 85mm 1.2L.Inspiration
I love working with children of all ages. It's so much fun to watch them having a good time being themselves and being curious about different things they find in the world. We had planned on shooting several photos with her stuffed animals in the grass that was next to the gravel road but she didn't really want anything to do with the grass. She liked the dirt and rocks much better as you can see in this photograph.Editing
I edited the image using Lightroom and Photoshop to achieve the final result. In my camera bag
I carry my Canon 5D Mark III, an 85mm 1.2L, a 135mm 2.0, a 50mm 1.4, and a Canon flash but I rarely use the flash.Feedback
My best advise when photographing children is to let them be themselves and let them have fun. When we started this session mom started to get very stressed because her baby would start to scream every time she stepped away from her just a few feet. We discovered she didn't like the grass we were trying to sit her in. When we took her off the grass and put her in the gravel road instead she absolutely loved the dirt and rocks. I ended up taking several great photographs of her on the dirt road. In other words you have to be able to adapt to what the children like. Let them be them.
