My biggest advise I could give when working with children is to be patient and make it fun for them. As long as they are having a great time and your always ready you'll get the best photographs ever of them. Ive worked with children of all ages. Some were easy and some I had to be very patient with because they were shy around strangers or they were just in a bad mood. Patience is the key and constantly try to have a good time making them laugh. My wife always comes with me on photo shoots and she helps to distract the parents if I have a parent who is starting to stress out because their child is not cooperating. When she distracts the parent I'm able to take the child's mind off the parent being stressed and they tend to calm down. You never know what will work when working with children so you just have to be patient and try everything until you figure out what works best. Also - you don't always have to have a great big smile to have a fantastic portrait. A great photograph can be without a big smiles.
