Location
Wahclella Falls in the Columbia River Gorge area. It's an easy 2 mile hike from where you park car.Time
Taken in mid afternoon.Lighting
Over head afternoon sun was ideal for this shot because I was doing a series of self portraits and wanted light on the rock in front of the waterfall. I did use an external flash for a fill light with the long exposure.Equipment
I used a Canon T3i Camera with tripod, 10-22mm lens and external flash set on rear sync curtain to delay the flash slightly.Inspiration
I've loved the Columbia Gorge area and it's beautiful, magical waterfalls since childhood when my parents took me there during a family vacation! There's nothing like being in this kind of a place with it's peaceful, calm epic beauty. I've seen lots of waterfall images that draw me in and make me want to try waterfall shooting, but when I went to this location, I knew I had to try and capture not only a beautiful waterfall, but add the human element to portray how it effects a person just by slowing down to stop, breath it all in and hopefully each viewer will somehow experience it too!Editing
I used light room to edit this.. I did use a brush on areas that I wanted to bring out highlights and details better and lighten some of the shadows, then warmed up the tones of the overall image. Then finished by sharpening it up in photo shop then saved it from there! I only know basics of light room and photo shop so if I can do it, anyone can! :)In my camera bag
Camera,Canon 6D, Canon T3i, Lenses: Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L ii, Canon 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5, Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II, Canon 50mm f/1.8 STM, Canon 18-55mm 3.5-5.6 IS II. I also have a Canon 430EX II external flash.Feedback
It's good to plan out exactly what you need for the shoot so you only take essential things and not be weighted down with extra equipment that won't be used. Make sure you have good walking shoes on! ( I plan to do better on that next time!) For a place like this, it tends to be dark even in the day time, so when you walk into high trees like this, it is good to have high afternoon lighting so it can create the "spotlight" effect like I used for this shot. Also, used a fill flash, but to keep it softer I delayed the flash by using the rear sync flash method to expose for the scene but delay the flash til last of exposure.
