Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at GateWay Arch in St Louis, from a hill looking through the arch to the Mississippi river

Time

This was taken late afternoon with some pretty long shadows

Lighting

The sun was at my back and about an hour from setting, it was starting to reach a few of the taller buildings downtown - a shadow of one is to the right of the frame

Equipment

This was taken with a Canon M50 camera and 7Artisans 7.5mm fisheye lens. I choose the M50 for several reasons - there was a lot of walking involved and it's a pretty small/light camera, and I'm not as afraid to swap lensies in the open on it since the sensor is pretty easy to clean

Inspiration

Although I had driven through St Louis a few times I had never stopped. I was taking a trip to Ohio and made a point to stay overnight near the arch on this occasion specifically to take some shots

Editing

This was shot in RAW and colors and shadows were enhanced a bit using Lightroom

In my camera bag

These days my 'walk about' setup is a Canon RP Mirrorless with a 24-240mm lens, but I'll also carry a 5D Mk III with any number of lenses if I'm looking to shoot something specific. I do have a couple of crop sensor bodies if I want a bit more reach, the extra magnification from the 1.6 crop factor helps there. I'm usually looking for cool things at random while traveling, so I often don't plan shots beforehand - I'm a pretty impromptu/opportunistic photographer. I've found I spend the most time with various prime lenses or some sort of super-zoom so I don't have to changes lenses out in the open.

Feedback

I always think of the 'journey' when I travel and try not to focus only on the destination - If I can I'll cut some day's drives short and look for someplace interesting to spend the night, even if it takes me off the direct root and adds a bit to the trip - the extra adventures are almost always worth it!
