Behind The Lens

Location
This shot was taken at the South Padre Island end of the main causeway between the island and Port Isabel, almost as far south as you can get in Texas without crossing the border into Mexico
Time
This was taken during the 'blue hour', the sun had just set behind the causeway
Lighting
This was taken during the blue hour - there was enough ambient light to take the shot hand-held shooting toward the sunset, but just barely!
Equipment
This was taken hand-held with a Canon 70D and Tamron 16-300mm lens.
Inspiration
This was my first trip to South Padre Island, and I was out running up and down the barrier island looking for places to shoot nice sunsets.
Editing
lighting and colors were enhanced a bit in LightRoom. This probably would have been a nice opportunity to do an HDR shot, but since I didn't have a tripod I didn't think I could hold the camera steady enough for the longer exposure shots required
In my camera bag
These days I normally carry a Canon 70D with a Tamron 16/300mm mounted, and a 5D Mk III with any number of lenses ranging from a 8mm diagonal fisheye to a Sigma 200-500mm telephoto depending on what I'll be shooting. I'm usually looking for cool things at random while traveling, so I often don't get to plan a lot of shots beforehand - I've found I spend the most time with various prime lenses and the 17-300mm Tamron though, the Tamron's range lets you capture almost anything on the fly and reduces the need for lens changes out in the open. There is a bit of barrel distortion, but nothing that Lightroom can't handle.
Feedback
In hindsight I should have carried a lightweight tripod and done an HDR combination, to bring out more details of the causeway and fishing peer.
