The image was taken in the Dolomite mountains, northern Italy on one of the photography holidays I run, destinations being in the UK and abroad.Time
This image was taken about 30 minutes after natural sunrise on the very last morning of our trip when we decided the night before for a super early start, load up our luggage and camera kit and set off for Tre Cime as our final destination of the trip. We arrived about 40 minutes before sunrise so in plenty of time to see this phenomenal area of outstanding natural beauty, nature is truly magnificent.Lighting
The mist was sat in the receding mountain valley's so I took the opportunity to share some experiences with my students of previous mornings like this so they could understand the scene that would unfold before them. Explaining to them that with the sun rising behind high mountains to our left it was inevitable that the mist would pick up it's light in between the peaks as we had no cloud cover at all and the density of the mist would "likely" vary so tones of light in the mist will be different and exaggerated by the shadows of the mountains.Equipment

This was always a destination on my trip for sunrise but leaving it until the final day wasn't part of the plan but sometimes you get lucky as long as you're there to take the image. The recession in the mountains was something we'd seen throughout the trip in various places but with the mist and early morning sun was on another level, truly breathtaking!Editing
Very little processing was needed as the soft grad filters allow for ground exposure, then lower them into place to shut the required amount of light out from the sky that suits your style. A bit of dodge and burn on the mist and shadow areas just to emphasise the mist and recession through the image to the back and crop a bit of unnecessary sky from the final image.In my camera bag

Be well prepared the night before for what you "might get in the morning'. The time at sunrise is "so precious" you won't have time to mess around as it is often over in a matter of minutes indecision will cost you images.. Have your camera/s set up with the correct "starter settings" the night before adapter rings on for filters if using them and have your mind ticking over with what you will do on your way to your chosen location, get your head in "camera mode" this will make quicker and more efficient decision making on location.
