Behind The Lens

Location

The image was taken at Chatham dockyard in London at a re-enactment event “Salute to the 40’s”

Time

The event was an all day event & this image was taken about 2pm.

Lighting

The image is 100% natural light with a little post processing to lift the face shadows.

Equipment

Canon 7d with a 70-200 f2.8 lens shot fairly close to the subject at 175mm to really get good bokeh.

Inspiration

I think just a simple look at the chap, the attire & his rugged look answers that one. I did have to ask him not to smile & go for the mean & moody look & after a few shots he nailed it.

Editing

A little lift on the face shadows plus a wee exposure lift... For the overall look the saturation & luminance was reduced & the sharpness increased quite dramatically to give the gritty look.

In my camera bag

For this type of event Canon 7d 70-200 f2.8 & a 105 Macro which is great for portraits too.

Feedback

Once you have identified with your subject my first take is to grab a couple of candid shots as sometimes posing them doesn’t always come off so the candid shots may well be better. Then engage with your subject & tell them how great they look & what drew you to them this gives them a sense of how you see them so when you ask them to pose they have a start point. Don’t always shoot them just where they are ask them nicely if they have a few minutes to spend with you & have a place you’d like to shoot them in your mind beforehand, considering light & background which is key to a successful shot. After that it’s down to your guidance & their posing skills.
