Congrats on the recent contest win with this photo. Great leading lines guiding eyes through the whole image. Gave it the “superb composition” award.

The photo is taken at Preston Sands which is between Paignton & Torquay in Torbay, Devon UKTime
My favourite time of day which is Sunrise, which as most landscape photographers will know doesn't always happen but if you are going for it make sure you arrive well before sunup to prepare yourself, decide on your composition, set up tripod, filters ready etc. then cross your fingers and what for the magic to happen.Lighting
Sunrise and sunsets give us a very low sun which will if you position yourself well enough give you light where you place it, in this shot I went for it across the wet cobbles of the slipway and using a soft graduated filter to hold back the light/exposure in the sky to keep the balance with the foreground.Equipment
Canon camera wide angle lens and Lee filters on a Manfrotto tripod with a remote trigger release to not disturb the camera when taking the shot.Inspiration
If I hadn't got the years of experience behind me to know that things can change very quickly I may have walked away and missed this shot. When I arrived with the tide in I had an initial pang of disappointment as the beach is normally good for very strong ebb sands which I love but it was in so you look for something different. My eye was drawn to the green rope around the railings and from here I watched the sea lapping around the posts making wonderful curved movement, there was my shot. As I started to set up I was aware of things changing in the sky (luck sometimes has your back) the "very overcast sky" appeared to be thinning out and after a few test shots to get my shutter speed just right luck was really with me and sunrise appeared in tremendous fashion. I chose the composition of shot and nature gifted me a wonderful image.Editing
Usual lens corrections - had to get rid of numerous dust bunnies from the sensor - bit of contrast and slight enhancement on the sunlight on the cobbles. In my camera bag
That image was taken with Canon kit a few years ago, now I am very much Sony with A7iii - A7iv - A7Riii bodies with various lenses - Tamron 28-75 f2.8 - Sony 90mm macro - Sony 16-35 f2.8 - Sony 70-200 f2.8 - Sony 200-600 f5.6-6.3 along with Canon 5dMkiii and 16-35 f2.8 Lee filters numerous - Heliopan polariser - remote triggers - Peak design carbon tripodFeedback
If you're shooting sunrise or even sunset make sure you are on location an hour beforehand if possible to get your shot planned composed and set your kit up. Don't hold back if the weather looks bad every weather condition good bad or indifferent, my view on this and what I tell all my students is "this is purely and simply offering you different opportunities so absorb what you've been given and work with it"! So good luck on your journey and do get in touch if you feel the urge, all the best, Steven
