Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at my home, where I have the equipment to set up a small photography studio

Time

The time of day when shooting in the studio is of little importance, given that the light is entirely artificial, the important thing is that the model is not too tired!

Lighting

it is a photo with completely artificial and constructed light, there is a single lighthouse with a large softbox at the top on the right. It is simple and effective lighting that I really like because it is very simple to create. Some call this type of lighting "Rembrandt" because it resembles the lighting of painters of that period.

Equipment

I used the sony A7iii, tamron 28-75 f2.8 lens and a studio flash with a large octagonal softbox. However, the fundamental thing for this type of shots is the flash and a large softbox. Oh without forgetting the background, it's a black fabric background with a series of stains that resemble an old wall

Inspiration

I wanted to create a photo of a girl who seemed to have noble origins, with a haughty look, from bottom to top, as we say in Italy: "with a snobbish nose". So I asked Ionella to raise her chin and look at me with a hint of arrogance, precisely to give this impression. Much of the effect is due to the jewels made by Sonia Censi, a friend of my wife who makes these jewels for a living.

Editing

when the light is right in the studio the post production to be done is very limited and consists of removing micro defects and enhancing lights and shadows. I always do a pass in photoshop to get what I want.

In my camera bag

what do I have in my bag... it depends. For these photos very little is generally needed, a camera and a lens, not even of the highest quality given that in the studio it is not necessary to open the diaphragm, in fact, since there is a background you can also shoot at F8 without any particular problems. The key thing is good light. Personally I use studio flash.

Feedback

The advice I can give is to try shooting with simple artificial lights, with a girl who is not ashamed of posing in front of the lens and is capable of interpreting what is asked of her. Of course there are professionals, but personally I never pay girls to pose because I take relatively few portraits. The paintings of the nineteenth century, or Vermer, Rembrandt, Caravaggio and even some Renaissance painters are an excellent source of inspiration.
