Behind The Lens

Location

This was made at sunrise over a lake in Mexico. We rented a space from a local and their dock was the perfect spot to watch the sky change every morning.

Time

This was taken at sunrise, in July of 2023, in Quintana Roo MX

Lighting

I didn't want the entirety of the sun in my frame, so I tried to shoot towards the clouds near the sun that had the best colors.

Equipment

Nikon D850, Sigma 24mm ART lens, CPL, and an old cheap tripod I've literally had for 20 years. (Time for a lightweight one, though!)

Inspiration

How can you NOT love this view? The sunrises over the east coast of Mexico are spectacular. I am not a morning person, but have found they're usually worth getting up for. And this time of day the roosters and other birds are waking up, the jungle is alive, and the water is so, so still.

Editing

To get the best mix of foreground and sky I futzed with the clarity and dehaze options in PS, and then I did a vertical crop of the image. Not much else was needed!

In my camera bag

These days it's usually my D850 (and for events a backup D800), an assortment of Sigma ART lenses (24mm, 50mm, 135mm), and if I'm traveling I'll bring my Nikon 80-400 for wildlife. I usually have a Nikon SB5000 and an SB900, a charger, extra batteries, plenty of extra memory, a CPL and an ND filter, a lens cleaning cloth, and usually snacks. If I'm not planning on doing a ton of creative photography I'll often go out for a day with just my D850 and one, maybe two lenses.

Feedback

If you want sunrise, plan on getting up early every day until you get the shot you want. If you wake up and the sky is clear and you don't care, go back to bed, no regret or guilt needed. If you wake up and it's super overcast and rainy, turn off your alarm and give yourself permission to skip the early shoot. If you want that perfect mix of sun and clouds, with loads of color, get up early and check that sky. Have all your gear prepped and ready to go (even mount your camera to your tripod in advance). Know exactly where you want to take your photo from. You shouldn't have to think too hard at that time of day, so plan everything in advance, then wait for the weather to cooperate.
