Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Lisbon, Portugal.

Time

It was about 4 PM.

Lighting

I took this photo with natural light, the late sun was just softly coming down on the pigeon.

Equipment

I have a Lumix DMC-TZ100, all my photos are taken with this little miracle of a camera...The best thing about this camera is that it has a good Leica lens and it is very easy to carry with you because it practically fits in your back pocket. I didn't use any extra equipment, I took the photo spontaneously free out of hand.

Inspiration

I was looking for shots of urban birds. When I saw this pigeon sitting on a piece of metal with a very nice background, I decided to try to take a close up and personal photo of it. In order to achieve that I had to climb up on a fence to get at the same level of the pigeon. Luckily it was an inquisitive little creature, letting me come so close. When I started talking, it bended it's head, exactly the shot I wanted to take.

Editing

I did a little post-processing in Lightroom to emphasize the colors and textures.

In my camera bag

I don't have any equipment in my bag (yet) I am a beginning photographer and I am learning to use a camera, to look for the good light, composition and point of view. One day when I know how to use and set the camera well enough, I will start to think about a bag filled with technical things instead of the need to understand how it works first...

Feedback

I saw this pigeon sitting on a piece of metal with a nice background. It's very important to choose the background carefully to make a good photo, any distracting items can spoil it. A good background can make the shot! I had to climb up on a fence to get closer to the pigeon, I didn't want to take the photo from a low position but close up to make it a personal photo. I climbed very carefully and slowly not to scare it, trying to get the trust of an animal is very important. The pigeon was looking at me and probably wondering what I was doing. A few clicks and I was happy with my cute little friend, bending it's head as if it was listening to my chitter-chatter. If you look at a subject to photograph, you have to try to realise what you want to achieve, Try to find the good light, the right point of view and the best composition... And most of all, take more shots with slightly different settings so you can choose the best one, once you get home and open your laptop when the magic of today's digital world begins... I allways crop it later into the size and composition I like best. Crop the photo in different ways, so you can choose the best one the next day when you can have a fresh look at them! Never disturb the animals and respect themt! I allways look at the reaction of the animal I try to photograph, the moment it shows fear, I back of and leave it in peace.
