Seen here is one of the more famous and popular fishing piers found on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Jennette's pier has been around in one form or another since 1939.

The original pier took a significant beating by Hurricane Isabel back in 2003, and was rebuilt into the 1000 ft. hurricane resistant structure seen here -- employing concrete pylons (instead of wooden ones) to help weather extreme storms.

Many piers along the NC coast have been damaged over the years, and had to either be repaired to resist hurricanes or demolished altogether. The North Carolina Aquarium estimates that out of the 36 North Carolina piers in operation in 1980, only 20 still remain open today. *
