Portsmouth was established in 1753, and the Island was once a thriving community along the Outer Banks of North Carolina. This fishing hamlet served as a strong point during trying times, but steadily the population dwindled as times changed. By 1956, only 17 residents remained on the island, and in 1971 the last remaining residents reluctantly moved to the mainland.
