Location
This photo was taken in Asheville, NC, in an area full of trailers covered in graffiti. It was the perfect location to play around with colored powders and smoke.Time
This was shot later in the day as the sun was still decently high up but just beginning to give a more yellow warmth instead of the harsher white light.Lighting
When it comes to lighting, this location really played a large role. Between the two trailers there was nothing but shade all around which worked great to shield us from the sunlight. It was a bit too dark though, so I decided to toss down a large white fabric to bounce some of the light from outside and brighten things up a bit. It also helped that the concrete was reflecting some of the sunlight as well.Equipment
This was shot handheld with a Nikon D850 and an 85mm lens. Didn't use a flash in this location, but we did use a white fabric as a bounce.Inspiration
The model and I really wanted to experiment with colored powders and smoke, and with that in mind I had us travel to an area that was full of graffiti. I felt like that location full of art and color would provide a great backdrop for the materials we were working with. Without that location and the art around it, I don't think we would have been able to create this shot.Editing
I processed the raw photo with the intention of bringing out the reds and dulling the other colors. After pulling that into photoshop for cleanup, I brought back some of the orange and dulled the shadows some as well. I really enjoy muted tones, so taking the vibrancy of certain colors down a notch helps achieve that.In my camera bag
I always carry my 4 primes with me. I have a 35mm, 50mm, 85mm, and 105mm, all Nikkor 1.8s. I've found that during photoshoots those 4 will always get what I need. I sometimes make use of a 24-70mm, but that's mainly for events. I carry my D850 as a main and occasionally add the D810 as a backup. I have a few attachments for video work like a mic and monitor, as well as multiple varying mounting plates for different tripods and stabilizers.Feedback
Location is key! This shot would not have been possible were it not for the amazing location we worked in. Even just as inspiration this location worked wonders.
