The Lake Lawson-Lake Smith Natural Area is owned by the City of Virginia Beach. Much of the lake resulted from borrow of sand to build roads in the area over 50 years ago.
There is an isthmus between the lake. High winds and undermined banks have weakened the foothold of large tree. There aren't many, but the victims become opportunity for aquatic life around the shoreline.
