Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photograph on Hornstrandir (Western Fiords, Iceland). This place is only accesible on foot (8 days walking, 9 big rivers to ford, path invisible, no marks, no people and 1 shelter) or by boat. I choosed the first option. I walked alone in the first days of July from Holmavik. Weather was bad and very cold. But I got 3 great days, sunny with good visibility. In the last night before I reached my goal- the cliffs of Horn, the weather changed. I woke up in the fog and I was thinking, that I will see nothing more then white that day, but when I climbed on the top of cliffs, I sow a parts of it. I was very happy. It was like present for me.

Time

It was nearly noon, but I liked the delicate light. I spend all day on the top of cliffs but the first photographs were my favored ones. In next 3 days I walked to Heysterri where I took boat to come back to the civilisation. Walking to Hornstrandir was one of the most beautifull hiking trips in my life.

Lighting

Hornstrandir is a protected area full of birds. I liked to watch how birds were diving into the fog, comming to their nests. I liked the fresh grass- even greener in the delicate light and yellow flowers wet and shining. Usually the mid day light is not great but in this place in this conditions was magic and simple in the same time.

Equipment

I had old Canon 5D, Canon 70-200L lens- my favored one.

Inspiration

I do not plan my photographs. I let them to grow up in my camera and my mind, inspired by simple life- my travels. I am slowly traveller always on foot, so I have time to stop and take photographs, even spend some longer time when I need. I always have tent and food for some days so nothing push me to hurry up. It keeps me in the state of mindfulness very near to meditation and lets me to keep my eyes wide open.

Editing

I grow up on analogue photography and I do very little post processing. RAW conversion, some tone and colours corrections. This photograph is almost untouched.

In my camera bag

I always try to have little equipment. to many things distract me. Otherviese my backpack is always heavy, tent food, stove,... so my photographic equipment is limited. Body, 2 lenses (70-200 and 17-40) grey filters, tripod (little Rollei) and many batteries.

Feedback

Bad weather is not really bad for photographer. It lets me to see other world, maybe less predictable, but sometimes unexpectedly beautiful. I also like unknown places, far away from civilisation where I can be alone and my meditation process is not disturbed. In such places I take the best photographs, even if the view is not so picteresque like in well known places.
