Less then a day after our Grandson was born we went to visit him and his parents at the Hospital. This was an opportunity to welcome the newest addition to our family and take pictures of this special event.Time
As we arrived shortly after lunch mom was finishing breast feeding the little guy. As mom changed his diaper I got my camera and flash out of my camera bag. I was standing behind them. When she first picked him up and put him on her shoulder she quietly looked at his face. I took my first picture as she gazed at his beautiful face. She then pulled him towards her and I took this photo, capturing a spontaneous, beautiful moment as mom gently gives her newborn a kiss on his cheek on 12/13/2013 at 12:31 PM.Lighting
The Hospital room had very subdued lighting, giving it a more relaxing, quiet mood. I knew I would need to use my Sigma external flash, setting it to bounce the light off the ceiling to not overwhelm the eyes of the newborn and reduce the chance of dark shadows.Equipment
I shot this photo with a Pentax K-x using my 18-55 mm f/3.5 and a Sigma EF-610-DG ST external flash.Inspiration
I most enjoy capturing spontaneous pictures of people. This was an unposed photo. I was in the right place at the right moment. Just as she kissed her son he opened his eyes and I captured the photo.Editing
I use Adobe Photoshop Elements to process my pictures. I shot this photo in JPG. The only processing I did was to slightly tweak the midtones. In my camera bag
I have used Pentax cameras since the late 1960s when I purchased a 35 mm SLR. My first DSLR is my Pentax K-x. I have the Pentax 18-55 mm and 50-200 mm lenses along with my Sigma 70-300 mm telephoto lens. I also have a Polarized filter and two Neutral Density filters in my bag that I use in some of my nature photography. I pack my Sigma flash when I will be doing mostly indoor photography.Feedback
Be ready and prepared. Spontaneous moments are gone in a flash. I have at times wished I had captured a certain moment but was not quite ready. As I took my camera out of the bag, I had my ISO set at 200, metering mode set a Pattern, white balance on Auto. All that was left to do was attach the flash, set it so it would bounce off the ceiling and I was ready to take pictures. Now it was a matter of noticing and watching. This time I was ready and prepared.
