Location
This photo was taken on Ellis Island at the Audubon Center at Riverlands, a wetlands area at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers.Time
The Audubon Center at Riverlands is about an hour drive from my home. I wanted to be there is the early morning in the hopes of photographing birds in the wetlands around the Mississippi River. So I was up early, grabbed a quick breakfast and headed north. My first stop was Ellis Island. From the parking area a gravel road runs the length of the Island about a mile long, I left the road to walk closer to the wetlands along Ellis Bay. When I came back to the road I noticed a man in the distance walking his dog. I took this photo at 8:05 AM.Lighting
When I arrived at the Audubon Center at Riverlands there was a thick fog. As the sun began to burn off the fog there was almost a mysterious, golden glow to the landscape.Equipment
This photo was shot with my Pentax K-x and my Sigma 70-300 mm telephoto lens. I took the photo at 300 mm focal length, ISO 200, f5.6 and 1/640 sec.Inspiration
My hopes in going to the Audubon Center at Riverlands was to photograph birds in the wetlands area. With the fog it was a very quiet and peaceful morning. To this point I thought I had the entire Center to myself. As I came back to the gravel road, I noticed a man in the distance walking his dog. It was like he was walking out of the fog straight toward me. I knelt down just off the side of the road and shot this photo in the hopes of capturing the quiet mystery of the morning.Editing
I shot my photos in RAW and process them in Photoshop Elements 10. To improve the glow of the fog I changed the White Balance from Auto to Daylight, increased the exposure a half stop and decreased the brightness setting. In my camera bag
In my camera bag I always carry my Pentax K-x and four lenses: a Pentax 18-55 mm, a 50 mm Macro and a 50-200 mm telephoto and a Sigma 70-300 mm telephoto. I also carry two Neutral Density filters and a circular polarizer filter for two of my Pentax lenses and a couple of sets of backup batteries. In a separate case I carry my tripod.Feedback
Being in the right place at the right moment with the right lens on is sometimes a matter of luck and some planning. Depending on what type of photos I hope to capture will determine what lens and settings I preset my camera to. Next is paying attention. When I hike in nature my goal is to notice what others my pass by and to capture this moment to then share with others. At times it means being flexible and changing lenses and settings. At other times what is preset pays off when there is only a split moment to capture the experience.
