Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in our home kitchen. I am a self taught photographer. I attempt to see things others may miss and share that beauty through my photography.

Time

I had bought a rose for my wife for our Anniversary. It was on our kitchen counter. In mid-afternoon as I walked into the kitchen the sun was perfectly spotlighting the rose. I took the picture on 11/26/2010 at 2:51 P.M.

Lighting

In mid-afternoon the sun, streaming through the kitchen window, perfectly spotlighted the rose, sitting on the counter dividing the kitchen from the eating area. The wall some 20 feet behind it was in the shadows,

Equipment

I used my Pentax K-x with my Pentax 50-200 mm telephoto lens at 150 mm. My camera was set at ISO 200, f/5.6 at 1/400 sec.

Inspiration

A rose is such a delicate, beautiful flower. When I saw the way the sun spotlighted its beauty, I immediately had to get my camera. I used my telephoto lens and a low f stop because I wanted just the rose to be infocus.

Editing

The original color jpg required no post processing. The lighting had perfectly highlighted the rose and the distant wall came out the deep black. To convert the photo to black and white I used Photoshop Elements 10. I choose the Portraits style because it gave the best balance of shadows in the rose petals.

In my camera bag

I carry my Pentax K-x with my Pentax 18-55 mm lens and 50-200 mm lens. I have a circular polarizing filter and two neutral density filters. I always have a couple extra sets of batteries and a micro fiber cloth for cleaning the lens, if needed. I often carry a tripod when I am doing nature photography in the great outdoors.

Feedback

Develop an eye for noticing the little things. It is often in the little things that deep beauty lies. Don't be afraid to try something. I took 5 or 6 different pictures of the rose. When I saw them on the computer I realized which one I liked the best. Worse thing is none of them are worth keeping. Then the next time I will try something a little different.
